You Can Take Your Hill

As my sleepy feet move across the blacktop, I see the hill. When you live about seventy feet above sea level, what lays before you seems more than just an incline.

Most days the hill leaves me breathless and not in a good way. It challenges me in a way that reminds me of my inadequacies. If hills could talk, I’m sure it has been conversing with the breeze and asking it to be quiet, “Give her a moment of silence. I want the only breath she hears to be her own. It helps her remember that taking a hill is hard and hot and to hold a hill, she must have persistence”

I never face the hill first. Preparation of my sleepy feet and cobwebbed mind always seems the best route. I greet God and the neighbors and begin to feel energized. Today, as I turn to face my foe, my hair begins to ruffle and my damp skin begins to feel cooler. Like a great coach, the breeze whispers, yes you can. Together it will be less difficult.

I begin to sing, “Holy Spirit, You are welcome here. Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere.”1  Today’s breeze reminds me of the Holy Spirit (One of the ways the Bible describes the Holy Spirit is wind.2 ) God says, ” ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD Almighty.”3

You got a hill before you? My hill today was small compared to many hills. Yet, it was still my hill and it loomed ahead.  There have been times I have felt as if I were scaling the Rockies. The problem so big, the situation so perilous, I didn’t know if I would make it. When I did, I looked around and there were peaks higher than mine and others who were so very brave, struggling to the top for rest.

To take our hill, we must surrender our climb to Holy Spirit power.

You can take your hill

Invite the Holy Spirit to fill you to overflowing today. I did as I walked. We need what only the Holy Spirit can give us – Dunamis power4. The power to overcome.- to take our hill. Let’s drive in our pickax and settle our feet carefully into each crevice. We can make it to the top. Grab hold of the rope and hold on tight. God’s pulling us toward Him.

  1. Oh, I love this post! But I couldn’t help thinking about the hills I’ve taken before and when faced with them again, fail to rely on the Lord to help me climb thinking instead I’ve done it before, I can do it again. We never stop needing His presence with us, no matter if we’ve conquered that hill hundreds of times. It may get easier, but we still need Him! Blessings, friend!

  2. I love this Carmen! It was a timely reminder to me today – I feel like I am climbing – and keep missing a step and falling – and trying to start again. I’ve got to focus in and let the Holy Spirit help me – I think I get so busy in marking off tasks that I just loose site of that. Thank you for this push! Great writing friend! Love you!

  3. Singing right along with you. Yes! Time to scale the hill. (And I’m super impressed by your walking. You might have just encouraged me to go out and try a few laps!) Holy Spirit, here we come!

  4. “Holy Spirit Power.” ~ How blessed are we? Love that we have that crazy-big power available to us, *in* us. He’s the best. <3 Thanks for sharing, Carmen (and for getting that song stuck in my head, b/c that's one of those songs that loves to stick with me. :D *smile* ) ((hug))

  5. Amen friend.
I can take on that Hill no matter how rough the steps looks, I will grab the rope as the Lord pulls me closer. Yes I may feel tired the road ahead may not look easy at the moment, I am relying on His unfailing grace.
    Loads of Blessings Carmen.

  6. Amen, Carmen! Let’s take those hills with His Holy Spirit power! Just what I need for the ones I’m facing now.

I saw on Monday that you’re doing videos! Couldn’t open it on my phone at the library where I was, but I look forward to watching soon. Good for you! Trying something new.

  7. Thank you, Carmen, for this encouragement to surrender to the Holy Spirit’s power. ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD Almighty.” Amen!
